Richmond hoops tourney a benefit for Haiti victims

The San Francisco Rumble and other teams of the semiprofessional American Basketball Association will play a series of games next week at the Richmond Police Activities League gymnasium to raise money for the post-earthquake relief effort in Haiti.  [Click here for a flyer]

Games will start at 7 p.m. at the RPAL gym, 2200 Macdonald Ave. (enter on 22nd Street), and students in RPAL and students in the Kiwins Club at Richmond High School are going all out to promote the event.

“When I was told about this, I wanted to help, I wanted to speak to the community,” said Vanh Keov, last year’s Kiwins president and now a student at UC Berkeley. “We may not be the richest in the world, but we can still help.”

Students have been planning how to spread the word about the series, which starts with a contest between the Rumble and the Compton Cobras on Monday. Games continue each day through Feb. 6 at the gymnasium.

Per-game tickets are $10 each; a series pass is $50. Or get a courtside seat to a game for $25.

RPAL and the Kiwins also are seeking sponsors, who will be acknowledged prominently at the games.

The Hilltop Courtyard by Marriott will provide accommodations for the teams, some of which have come from as far away as Hawaii.

For advance tickets, call RPAL at 510-621-1221 or go to rpal.org and click on “Pay for Events.” Tickets also will be available at the door.

“Our entire school is involved with this fundraiser,” said Gina Saechao, Richmond High senior class president. “We’re going to going to all the other schools to let them know about it.”
